Independent Chair
The ABAC Scheme was established in 1998 and is a regulatory scheme for the Australian alcohol beverages industry. The Scheme exists to promote the responsible marketing (including naming and packaging) of alcohol.
The ABAC Scheme is seeking to appoint an Independent Chair to provide leadership to the Management Committee which has responsibility for the management and review of the Scheme, including the Responsible Alcohol Marketing Code, the pre-vetting service and the complaints scheme.
The Independent Chair’s role is to work closely with the Management Committee and establish and maintain an effective relationship with the Chairperson of the Board of Directors and the Chief Executive Officer.
In addition to chairing the meetings of the Management Committee and overseeing the work of the Scheme a very important part of this role is to be “the face” of ABAC, representing them at briefing sessions for state and federal politicians, relevant Departmental officials, the alcohol and advertising industry and proactively interacting with the media.
The Management Committee meets quarterly in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne or Adelaide and it is envisaged that the Independent Chair would spend approximately 30 days per annum engaged in ABAC Scheme activities. The capacity to travel and to also be responsive to opportunities to advance the reputation of ABAC is critical to the success of the Independent Chair and ABAC.
We are seeking a person who has, or is able to develop relationships, at the state and federal government levels and would be seen as bi-partisan in that environment, is an influencer and negotiator and has a collaborative leadership style. It is essential that the Independent Chair is, and is perceived to be, completely independent from the alcohol beverages industry. Membership of the Institute of Company Directors would be highly regarded.
The position is remunerated and will commence on 1 July 2023 for an initial 1 year term with the option of a further 2 year term.
Confidential enquires may be made to the Chief Executive Officer, Jayne Taylor on 0411 700 225.

Applications should include a cover letter and resume in Word format and must be submitted by email to the Chief Executive Officer via jtaylor@abac.org.au.
