Welcome

Australia has a quasi-regulatory system for alcohol advertising: guidelines for advertising have been negotiated with government, consumer complaints are handled independently, but all costs are borne by industry.

The Alcohol Beverages Advertising Code (ABAC) Scheme is the centrepiece of Australia’s quasi-regulatory system and is administered by a Management Committee which includes industry, advertising and government representatives.

Changes to the ABAC Scheme

In December 2008, the ABAC Management Committee signed-off on changes to both the Code and the Rules and Procedures, which saw the ABAC coverage expanded to include the naming and packaging of new products.

These new rules came into force on 1 November 2009.  The new Code and Rules and Procedures, which include naming and packaging, can be found by following the previous links.
